Oti elected as new speaker of Solomon Islands 11th Parliament

Former diplomat and Foreign Affairs Minister, John Patteson Oti has been elected the new speaker of Solomon Islands 11th Parliament in a secret ballot today.

Mr. Oti recently served as the Solomon Islands High Commissioner to Fiji.

He won after polling 30 votes ahead of his only rival, former speaker, Ajilon Jasper Nasiu who polled 15 votes.

Three ballots were spoilt while two Member’s of Parliament (MPs) were absent.

Hon. Stanley Festus Sofu, MP for East Kwaio constituency is the new deputy speaker after he was elected unopposed.

Solomon Islands 11th Parliament convened its first meeting today.

Prime Minister Manasseh moved a motion of special adjournment of parliament until 4 June.
