ROC lauds SI for support

The Republic of China (ROC)/Taiwan has expressed profound gratitude to the Solomon Islands government and its people for speaking up for them at the United Nations lately.

ROC ambassador to Solomon Islands Victor Yu made the comments last week (Thursday night) during the celebration of ROC’s national day (Double Ten), held at the Mendana Hotel in Honiara.

“On behalf of my Government, I would like to express our heartfelt thanks to Honourable Prime Minister Sogavare for extending SI’s strong support for Taiwan in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

“As Prime Minister said in his speech in the UN: Solomon Islands recognizes the fundamental rights of Taiwan 23 million people to participate meaningfully in the UN specialized agencies, and calls for Taiwan’s free access to WHO and ICAO,” Yu said.

“As for Taiwan’s engagement with the international community, central to the government policy is the “Steadfast Diplomacy.”

Yu said Taiwan remains firmly committed to common values of peace, freedom, democracy, and human rights as we forge sustainable partnership with our diplomatic allies and enhance friendship and practical cooperation with other friendly countries.

“Based on the principle of mutual respect and assistance, this new diplomacy paves the way for Taiwan to work with all like-minded countries, including Solomon Islands, to play more significant roles in the international community and make greater contributions to the world.

“In terms of Taiwan making contribution to the world, it is a very important endeavour that Taiwan bids for participation in the international conferences and activities under the guidance of the UN, the specialized agencies and its peripheral organizations,” he said.

He said the ROC (Taiwan) has long been actively extending effective assistance to many developing countries through bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

“Taiwan’s willingness to make contribution toward the fulfilment of the 2030 Agenda must not be ignored. PM Sogavare rightfully said implementation of the 2030 Agenda calls for all hands on deck, and he calls on the UN to include Taiwan in its work.

“Once again, our sincere thanks to Solomon Islands for sticking up for Taiwan in the UNGA.

“The Republic of China (Taiwan) seeks to deepen cooperation with all nations on the basis of shared values.

“As a model global citizen, Taiwan upholds the universal values of peace, freedom, democracy and human rights. These are the values we proudly share with Solomon Islands,” he added.

He said Taiwan will continue making its culture, social diversity and lifestyle a benchmark of the world.

“Based on our common values, Solomon Islands and Taiwan always support each other. Over the past 33 years, we have built up our strong friendship and alliance through mutual assistance.

“Taiwan shall remain a loyal friend and a development partner of Solomon Islands for the years to come,” Yu said.
