THE Ministry of Culture and Tourism is taking steps to refurbish the former Festival of Pacific Arts (FOPA) village at Panatina next year.
Thats according to the Director of Culture and Tourism Dennis Marita.
Mr Marita was speaking at the Solomon Islands Artists Association (SIAA) open day on Wednesday at the Art Gallery ground in Honiara.
“Next year we will be refurbishing the former FOPA village at Panatina.
“We are going to refurbish that village, clean it up and do better set up in that place,” he said.
He said the refurbishment will include building up of some permanent structures.
“We are looking at putting some permanent structures there including traditional structure and that will be another avenue for artists and the arts and the cultural producers for them to display their products to go in line with the cruise ship tourism industry,” he said.
At the same time Mr Marita said, apart from that one, it is part of their preparation for the hosting of the 6th Melanesian Arts festival in two years’ time here.
“The country (Solomon Islands) will be hosting the 6th Melanesian Arts Festival (MAF) in two years’ time.
“So all this infrastructure is part of the preparation for the festival (MAF) and in the long term that’s your (artist) home and your avenue to display your products,” he said.
